Many people would not readily associate the name of the late, great Cozy Powell with a 'highbrow' musical style such as Jazz-Rock/Fusion. The flamboyant, hard-hitting veteran drummer, the powerhouse behind such high-profile, hard rocking acts as Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group and Black Sabbath (not to mention a brief stint replacing Carl Palmer as the P in ELP), was not renowned for the subtlety of his approach to drumming. Having been considered a as a replacement for both John Bonham and Keith Moon should bear witness to the fact that Cozy, though by all means a very skilled, highly regarded practitioner of his craft, was certainly not cut out of the same cloth as the likes of Bill Bruford.

Colin "Cozy" Trevor Powell was an English rock drummer, who made his name with many major rock bands like The Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, Whitesnake and Black Sabbath. Powell had appeared on at least 66 albums, with contributions on many other recordings. Many rock drummers have cited him as a major influence. Polydor's The Very Best of Cozy Powell is culled from his early-'80s AOR and hard rock records…

Following the 1983 release of Powell's third solo album "Octopus", it took another 9 years for him to come up with his fourth and final release prior to his untimely death. This album was recorded between Powell's two stints with Black Sabbath, and following its release he took a band on the road under the name Cozy Powell's Hammer. Once again, he calls upon a who's who of musicians to support him, although the line ups here are somewhat different to those which appeared on his first two albums.

Third solo album from Cozy Powel entitled Octopuss from 1983. The music from this album is the most variated one from his entire solo career. Some personal changes aswell here, 3 new musicians among those three John Lord from Deep Purple. Again a solid jazz rock album, better than predecesor and in the same league with the first, Octopuss brings more consistency in the pieces and in the manner of interpretation aswell.

Tilt is his second effort from 1981 of this famous drummer. Beside the musicians who colaborate on his first work, on his second album he invited even a saxophone player Mel Collins among other well known and respectd musicins like Neil Murray from Colosseum fame and later in Black Sabbath, David Sancious a famous jazz player, etc. As you might guest this second album is a little diffrent over the first. In places is more light, more polished but keeping that atmosphere from the first one.

Never really liked the Emerson,Lake and Powell album so I'm quite surprised how good this is. Cozy Powell (RIP) briefly replaced Palmer in the eighties incarnation of ELP but was always going to struggle to make the drum stool his own.Palmer after all was one of the best drummers in the seventies rock scene. Powell was without question a great heavy rock drummer but you would not expect symphonic prog to be his forte.

ELPowell emerged when a mid-1980s reunion was sidelined due to Carl Palmer's contractual obligation to Asia. So, with Palmer's blessing, Emerson and Lake recruited fellow British skin basher Cozy Powell. Powell had worked with several popular hard rock acts (from The Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow & Black Sabbath) and had a noticeably harder and more pronounced percussive approach.

When Carl Palmer was unable to join Keith Emerson and Greg Lake for a mid-‘80s ELP reunion, his resourceful cohorts drafted veteran British skin-basher Cozy Powell, who had played with Jeff Beck, Rainbow, and many others. Thus constituted, Emerson, Lake & Powell released a self-titled album in 1986 and embarked on a tour. The Sprocket Sessions were originally released as a pair of bootlegs, one consisting of the band's studio rehearsals for the tour, and one containing a concert recording from Lakeland, FL. Endorsed by the band and cleaned up from an original master, this disc consists of the former.
